Central Illinois Ushers In a New Era In Air Travel
Peoria, IL— The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria (MAAP) is pleased to announce the completion of the $65 million General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport new terminal construction project. A ribbon cutting/press conference was held to commemorate the event. Local, state and national officials offered commentary on the project:
“I’m thrilled to be in Peoria today to help celebrate the opening of the new General Wayne A. Downing terminal at the Peoria International Airport,” said Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. “Because federal, state, and local officials all came together to build this project, this region is better positioned than ever to grow the economy and help America win the future.”
“The Peoria International Airport is a critical transportation link for central Illinois,” said Senator Dick Durbin. “The completion of this new terminal, funded in part through $950,000 in federal appropriations spending and a $6.3 million federal grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, puts the Peoria Airport in the position to serve travelers safely, securely and efficiently for many decades to come.”
"With a global economy, most visitors' first impression of central Illinois is the Peoria International Airport. The opening of this first-class airport will provide a red carpet welcome to potential businesses, visitors and returning taxpayers,” said Congressman Aaron Schock. “Getting customers and employees in and out of our community is key to keeping and attracting employers in our region. This new airport will help keep and grow these good paying jobs here in central Illinois. As a frequent flyer, I can attest to the much needed upgrade. The shuttered facility had far outlived its usefulness."
Dean Heinzman, MAAP Chairman, remarked, “We felt how excited the community was about this project during our public open house in January and are ready for residents and visitors from around the world to start utilizing this exceptional facility.”
Officials broke ground on the project in October 2008. The 125,000-square-foot terminal will be able to service approximately one million passengers annually through 12 gates. Ticket counters, gate areas, baggage claim and rental car desks are all located on one floor in the main concourse.
Other terminal amenities include:
The Hangar Too: The terminal also has both land and air side restaurants, giving travelers food service access on both sides of security.
Children’s Activity Areas: There are two children’s activity areas located past TSA security on both wings of the passenger terminal.
Up, Up and Away Gift Shop: The shop will offer general sundries, magazines, candy, souvenirs and lots of unique items that say “Peoria.”
Premier Services: Premier Lot and Lounge memberships are available for purchase. Lot members are able to leave their vehicle in a well lit, fenced lot just a short walk away from the terminal and ticket counters. Lounge members have access to a pass-coded lounge area with ergonomic workstations and complimentary beverages.
Conference Suite: This 830-square-foot room has modular-style seating/tables for 24 guests and can be rented for business or organization meetings.
Wireless Internet: FREE Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal.
Hotels & Visitors Information: A kiosk near baggage claim provides information on lodging, dining, rentals and attractions, as well as free direct-dial to local services.
